  • 8.12Gent Jazz Festival looking for Young Jazz Talent.

Jef Neve, Tom Callens, Isolde Lasoen, Carlo Nardozza, Mattias Van de Wiele, Robin Verheyen, François Delporte, Lionel Beuvens... All of them once participated in the Young Jazz Talent competition and eventually ended up as winners.

The winners of this competition do not receive an amount of money but are guaranteed to play a number of (paid) concerts. The main ambition is to give young musicians opportunities to play their music so that they can convince an audience and not just the members of a jury. Those opportunities consist of a number of prestigious concerts: a Jazzlab Series Tour, a concert at the Gent Jazz Festival, the closing concert of the Young Jazz Talent competition 2010 and a concert at Jazz Maastricht and Dinant Jazz Nights.

Young Jazz Talent is a Duvel Moortgat initiative. It is organised by the Gent Jazz Festival in collaboration with Jazzlab Series and searches for young and talented musicians every year. There are no restrictions concerning the line-up: solo, duo, trio, quartet... everything is possible. Eight bands will be selected to perform in the Duvel Droomschip in the historic centre of Ghent during the Ghent Festivities (July 19 until July 26). Monday July 27 the laureate will be announced after the concert of Bender Banjax (last year's winner).

If you would like to participate you should send a demo before March 15, 2009 with at least 4 songs, a biography of the band, contact details and the age of all musicians to:

    Gent Jazz Festival
    Young Jazz Talent Ghent
    Abrahamstraat 9
    9000 Ghent

Beginning of April the selected bands will be anounced and contacted.

Jeroen Van Herzeele (tenorsaxofoon), Fabian Fiorini (piano), Jean-Jacques Avenel (bas), Giovanni Barcella (drums)

  • 19.7the second part Gent Jazz Festival is once more a big success!! Also on Thursday July 17 and Friday July 18 a lot of people attended Gent Jazz Festival. There was little room left during the first concert of Buscemi with his big band and pianist Michel Bisceglia. The Herbaliser gave the audience what they expected, a stunning and music to dance! Next a true diva awaited to appear: Erykah Badu. The audience could already taste her music by a performance of her band and after the show it was very clear that this neo soul queen has a lot to offer besides singing. She introduced her new album New Amerykah: part one and even gave a percussion solo to do so.

Friday the 18th of July was Cuba day! The evening started peacefully with a concert of the young pianist Roberto Fonseca. He certainly gave goose bumps to a great deal of people in the audience. This was also the case when the grand old lady of Cuban music Omara Portuondo appeared on stage and now we know why she deserves this name. Seldom have we heard such a sensitive and profound voice as hers. Some people in the audience were so touched that a tear of joy or compassion appeared in their eyes. After this concert the members of Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club ensured the true warm Cuban vibe, even when the weather was not that good again. Despite their age, these enthousiasts are still able to provide a true party! Gent Jazz Festival wants to thank the audience in advance for a splendid 2008 edition!
